You want your portraits to look good, and even more so you want everyone to look their best! So you ponder on what everyone should wear, making sure everyone looks good together! I think a lot of us, myself included like to play it safe. I’ve noticed that there are many that will have everyone wear the same thing (such as white shirts and jeans). Now there is nothing wrong with white shirts and jeans, and there is nothing wrong with everyone matching no matter what the color or outfit style. But my question to you would be, do you usually wear the same outfits? Probably not unless you are twins or triplets, but even then you probably don’t unless your parents dress you that way.
Even though you want to look good as together, I think it is important that you find outfits that play up to each individuals’ personalities. We all have different styles and personalities and to me a good portrait is all about capturing those individual qualities. I also think that a good portrait is capturing who we are during that time in our lives. If everyone was to match you lose a bit of what defines who you were at that time. Everyone starts to blend in, which loses the sense that you are unique and special.
So for your next portraits don’t be afraid to be YOU! Allowing everyone to keep to their style but tying it all together with coordinating colors! Below is a good example of how to coordinate colors without matching!
